It is, moreover, highly likely that Descartes knew of Gorlaeus philosophy, for as Verbeek puts it, His book, detestable though it was to people like schoock and Voetius , was in everybody s hands. 16 Hence, it was not unreasonable for Voetius to conclude that, based on his commitment to Gorlaeus substance/mode ontology , Descartes must have secretly embraced its logical implication, namely, that the soul cannot be a substantial form that composes a substantial unity with the body.
